2009 International Conference on Molecular Neurodegeneration (ICMN)

May 18-20, 2009, Xiamen, China

Neurodegenerative diseases are the leading cause of dementia in the elderly and affect an increasing number of the aging population. Significant progress has been made in the past 20 years in understanding disease mechanisms and in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of various neurodegenerative diseases. To provide a unique platform for researchers to share their most recent research advances and explore future directions in neurodegeneration studies, Molecular Neurodegeneration and Institute for Biomedical Research, Xiamen University will co-organize the “First International Conference on Molecular Neurodegeneration” on May 18-20, 2009, in Xiamen, a beautiful coastal city located in the southeast region of China.

Dr. Steven Heinemann
(The Salk Institute, USA)
Member of the US National Academy of Sciences

The primary goal of this conference is to promote neurodegenerative research in China and in neighboring Asian countries, and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas relevant to neurodegeneration research. More than 20 world-wide leading scientists have been invited as conference speakers, including Dr. Aaron Ciechanover, a 2004 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry for his discovery of the ubiquitin system, who will deliver a keynote speech describing the relationship between protein aggregation and neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, Dr. Steven Heinemann, a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, along with dozens of the world’s most prominent researchers in the fields of neurodegeneration, will participate and present in the meeting, making this conference one of the highest level scientific conferences, if not the highest, ever held in China in the area of neurodegeneration. Success of this meeting will generate greater interest in neurodegeneration research and improve international collaboration in this important research area.

This conference will be co-organized by Molecular Neurodegeneration and Institute for Biomedical Research, Xiamen University.

Molecular Neurodegenerationhttp://www.molecularneurodegeneration.com/) is an open access, peer-reviewed online journal that will encompass all aspects of neurodegeneration research at the molecular and cellular levels. Molecular Neurodegeneration is published by BioMed Central, an independent publisher committed to ensuring peer-reviewed biomedical research is Open Access. Molecular Neurodegeneration's articles are archived in PubMed Central. BioMed Central is working closely with the Thomson Reuters (ISI) to ensure that citation analysis of articles published in Molecular Neurodegeneration will be available, and now its unofficial impact factor is 4.00.

Institute for Biomedical Research, Xiamen University (IBMR) (http://biomed.xmu.edu.cn/)is established to promote the transformation of basic research into clinical application. There are six centers in IBMR including Cancer Research Center, Cell biology and Infectious Diseases Research Center, Metabolic Disease Research Center, Neurodegenerative Diseases and Aging Research Center, Translational Medicine Research Center and Natural Product Chemistry Research Center. IBMR is dedicated to revealing the fundamental molecular causes of diseases and devising the innovative therapies of tomorrow.
